Since 1983, Frank Shankly (Tim Buckwalter) has been a DJ. He started by hosting a 40-minute segment featuring various musical styles on his high school radio station. Shortly after, he co-founded Special Forces, a DJ crew that played crowd favorites at school dances and parties.

Frank was raised in Philadelphia, where he developed an appreciation for the music of artists such as Jean Carn, Shirley Scott, John and Alice Coltrane, and the incredible sounds produced at Joseph Tarsia’s Sigma Sound Studios.

Nowadays, he spins his version of “sleaze,” a uniquely Bay Area mix of mid-tempo cuts — usually 90–100 beats per minute (BPM) — with uplifting or romantic vocals. Sets are packed with lesser-known covers of classic grooves and rare cuts, creating an alternative sound from music’s past and present, as well as a soulful vibe with an intimate feel. And always on 45 rpm.
